OKC Junior Invitational

April 10, 2021
OKC Boathouse District

The Tenth Annual OKC Junior Invitational took place Saturday, April 10, on the Oklahoma River in the Boathouse District.

Crews travelled from around the region to compete at the 2021 event. Over 182 athletes from seven teams including

  • Dallas Rowing Club
  • Hockaday School (Dallas)
  • St. Mark’s School (Dallas)
  • Tulsa Youth Rowing Association
  • Founders Rowing Club (Dallas)
  • Episcopal School of Dallas

The event is an important warm-up this year for crews as they get ready to compete at the USRowing Central Youth Championships next month at OKC. “We’re really excited to be back competing again on our home water. This event is an important first step for us as we figure out what our top boats will be for regionals and test our speed against other crews.” said Cian Noone, Varsity Boys Head Coach.

The regatta was a success for Riversport Crews as OKC managed to place boats in the final of every event they entered. The men’s teams placed 2nd in both the varsity double and quad, while the women’s team won the varsity quad. “We’re delighted to come away with a win in the quad; I think it’s a great indicator of our speed going into regionals and it’s made the team excited for what’s to come!” said Dinah Harjo, Program Manager and Varsity Girls Head Coach.

With everyone focusing on sculling events this year due to COVID there was no competition in the varsity sweep events. However OKC crews put on an exhibition event with the varsity fours and eights from both the men’s and women’s teams competing.

About the event

Started in 2011, this rowing competition began with four teams and has grown to include teams from around the Central Region. Coaches and volunteers run this casual regatta, so novice and varsity crews can gain 2000 meter race experience on the Oklahoma River in preparation for USRowing Central Youth Rowing Championship each May.
