Rowing Without Limits
The VIARP Vipers is like any other rowing team.
They practice twice a week. They compete twice a year. They celebrate big wins and birthdays. They work hard and have fun.
But something sets this team apart that you might not see.
The VIARP Vipers are rowing with limited-to-no vision.
How? Athletes row by listening to and feeling the rhythm of the boat, experiencing the power of being on the water in a whole new way.
“Visual impairment is an unseen problem – no pun. Those afflicted are frequently unable to get out. They can’t exercise, socialize or just enjoy being outdoors. RIVERSPORT understands all of that and provides all we need to operate.” -Gary Mayo, VIARP Vipers Founder and Coach
Since 2008, RIVERSPORT has provided free rowing and paddling opportunities for individuals with visual impairments and other adaptive needs. Through practices and races, these athletes are able to experience a sense of freedom and possibility on the water. Moreover, they find a community that’s equal parts supportive, rewarding and inclusive to all who find it.
“It’s gratifying when you train throughout the year with a group of people who put in the time and put in the effort. I rowed for the Love’s Corporate Rowing League team for eight years before volunteering with the Vipers. One of my most rewarding moments actually happened during a race when I unfortunately had to row against the Vipers – but I was really proud because they ended up winning! They beat all the other corporate rowers.” -Chris Mullins, VIARP Vipers Volunteer Coach
