Being outdoors: nice or necessary?

We think necessary. So, we’ve given away 300+ RIVERSPORT Connects season passes to OKC metro families who’ve suffered financial loss from the COVID-19 crisis. When one family bought season passes, we were able to give season passes to a family in need. It’s part of our RIVERSPORT Connects initiative that recognizes the power of outdoor recreation to help restore a sense of well-being to our families and our community.

Our goal is to help financially-challenged youth and their families have access to outdoor sports and recreation, regardless of their ability to pay, and it’s made possible through generous donors who share our belief in the importance of the outdoors.

The program has closed for 2020, but we still offer scholarships, free camps and other resources to help families in need. If you’d like to know more about the opportunities, email us!

We believe in restoring hope and nurturing resiliency, and that being outdoors is one of the best ways to do it. We’re part of the national Rethink Outside movement that’s taking bold steps to ensure everyone has access to the outdoors. It’s also part of our greater OKC Thrive Outside initiative. We’ve already provided thousands of hours of outdoor recreation to metro area youth; now we’re taking it up a notch to include families.

Engaging in outdoor recreation removes us from the stresses of everyday life. Challenging our bodies and breathing in fresh air connects us to the present moment. Having pure and simple fun restores family bonds. At its deepest level, outdoor play can heal emotional wounds.

We believe in the power of play. The power of the outdoors. And the power that comes from community and shared experiences.
